150 of IPB New Students Participate in Cooking Demo Using Husk Furnace
About 150 of IPB new students participate in cooking demo using husk furnace, on Friday (8/10) at IPB Dramaga Campus. “This activity preceded by an offer of Mr. Irzaman, a lecturer of General Physics at The Joint Preparation Class (TPB) IPB, who offered new students a cooking demo using the husk furnace. Many students are interested as they have never seen it before. Most of the students come from town, but once they grasp the explanation, they are interested to participate.” said the prefect of 47th Mechanical Engineering and Bio-systems, Alfin Hafidunandar.
“The idea of utilization of husk as fuel”, said Alfin, “is very brilliant, especially if it can be applied in villages. I want to apply it as well later in my village, in Jombang, paddy husks are often treated as waste, discarded or burnt away. If you can harness the benefits of them, they would be very useful for the people there.”, said Alfin.
Husk furnace research has been conducted since 1998, and today, the husk furnace IPB research team, coordinated by Dr. Irzaman, is intensively promoting their invention to many parties. “We just socialized it in South Sumatra. In the future, we are going to conduct an assessment in Gorontalo, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) and Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Socialization to local government will be accordance with the activities of the Institution for Research and Community Service (LPPM) IPB” said Dr. Irzaman.
The cooking demo in the socialization of husk furnace to new students. “What impressive are the motivation and enthusiasm from the students of their participation in the cooking demo, the activity all funded solely by the students. They bought and provided the materials all by themselves. They are even willing to disseminate the furnace to their respective regions. For the future we will annually organize such event involving TPB students of IPB.”, said Dr. Irzaman.
Recently, the research team successfully utilizes husk furnace’s fire as fuel to burn oyster mushrooms raw materials. Turns out the soot of combustion, can be cavitated (mixture of water and oil) as material of cavitation stove. “The soot of the furnace combustion, we collect then cavitate them and we process them into fuel for cavitation stove which we’re currently observing. Its carbons, for us, are good news instead of bad.”, continued Dr. Irzaman. One more recent study of the team, the carbons as the combustion products, successfully extracted into silicons which are quite promising. In industry, silicons are used as the material of various electronic equipment. Dr. Irzaman hope husk furnace became the mainstay products of IPB.
